A teacher noticed a lump on the 12-year-old girl’s neck and sent her to the clinic at school. Bulging eyes and weight loss made the girl a target of teasing. She couldn’t concentrate in class so her grades were going down. We ordered tests that showed an overactive thyroid and arranged for her to see a specialist. Now she is responding to treatment and feeling better and happier--because medical help was there for her at school.
We helped a teen go to school for the first time. The girl, a recent immigrant, had the first physical exam of her life at one of our clinics. We found several birth defects and arranged genetic testing for her and members of her family. They were diagnosed with the same congenital syndrome. As a result, the girl qualified for special education and is finally able to go to school.
